A schoolgirl from California has spent her summer figuring out that President Obama is related to every former U.S. President. All Presidents that is, except for Martin van Buren (yeah, one of my favourites too!). This seems like an extraordinary way for someone to spend a summer, and I’m not sure that Americans will particularly like the idea that all of their rulers are in some way connected. Part of the reason for the existence of the United States was to break away from the old dynastical ruling elites of Europe. To find that in fact they never got away from the old family ties will no doubt rankle some more “isolationist” Americans.
